Safe Families for Children
When a crisis strikes a family with children, its effects can be devastating. Many of us would turn to relatives and friends for support. However, some families can be really isolated with no such network to assist them. Safe Families for Children (Safe Families) provides support for such families whilst their issues are being resolved, often providing a short stay for their children with a trustworthy family, if needed.
Safe Families recognises that when socially isolated parents or carers face issues such as mental or physical illness, addiction, homelessness, financial difficulty, bereavement, relationship breakdown etc. The stress brought about by the crisis may easily lead to the neglect of children in the family to a significant extent, and even increase the likelihood of other forms of child abuse occurring.
Safe Families recruits, trains and supports volunteers who get alongside a family to offer the support they need.
This may include someone looking after a child aged 0-10, including teenage parents, for a brief stay, usually for just a few days or perhaps up to a few weeks. It can also include regular respite arrangements.
