Day-to-day we provide sensory, motor and attachment assessments and treatment to children and families across the North East at our state-of-the-art SI clinic in Thornaby and in over 45 mainstream and specialist schools and PRUs, across County Durham and beyond.  Future Steps is built on the passion and work ethic of our incredible team members. Courses to choose from:

Sensory Survival in the Mainstream Classroom: A Teacher’s Guide to Managing Sensory Behaviour & Needs (1 Full day or 2 x ½ days)

Managing sensory-based behaviour in the classroom can be problematic, especially in the constraints of the mainstream setting. This course will give educators an insight into the causes of challenging behaviours and from there, course leaders can support educators to formulate strategies that will work within their classrooms.

Sensory Guidance for Special Schools: Insight into how sensory development impacts on the children and young people in specialist provisions and what can be done to support development in this environment. (1 Full day or 2 x ½ days)

In a specialist environment, educators are essential to ensuring children and young people to reach their full potential. This course will provide knowledge on the Sensory Systems and an understanding of how working on these systems, from an education perspective, can make an immense impact on development. Course leader will also support transition of this theory into practice.

 

When Dysfunction Meets Education: Identifying sensory/motor dysfunction in a child, understanding the impact on educational progress and how to help (1 Full day or 2 x ½ days)

In every classroom there is a child who is struggling to keep up with their peers academically and yet they seem to present with no obvious challenges. This course will demonstrate just how many sensory/motor challenges a child or young person could be experiencing every day, why they are unable to articulate them and how altering the curriculum and classroom environment can positively impact their educational attainment and support them reach their full potential.

 

The Journey of Handwriting: An OT perspective of handwriting from mark making to cursive (Twilight course)

Understand the importance of the motor and sensory systems and the effect of visual perception on handwriting and fine motor skills and discover new strategies for your classroom, to support every child to be proficient in the art of handwriting. Through practical activities, experience first-hand the challenges that a child who struggles with handwriting faces every day, in and out of the classroom.

 

Sensory Obstacles to Forming Secure Attachments- A sensory insight into working with a child’s attachment framework and how support them to form secure attachments (1 Full day)

Through the use of real case studies and videos, Attachment Specialist Occupational Therapist, Julie Davis provides an insight into the importance of the sensory system for a child or young person and how this system can affect their behaviour and ability to form secure attachments with parents, carers or caregivers.
