South Tees Youth Justice Service

South Tees Youth Justice Service is a multi-agency partnership, serving the Local Authority areas of Middlesbrough and Redcar and Cleveland. The Youth Justice Service undertakes the supervision of young people between the ages of 10 and 17 years who are subject of court orders and police-referred out-of-court disposals.

South Tees Youth Justice Service works as a partnership, with representatives from Cleveland Police, public health, Middlesbrough and Redcar & Cleveland Children's Services departments, and the National Probation Service. The service includes staff specifically trained to work with young people who are involved with, or at risk of becoming involved with, the criminal justice system, including staff seconded from partner agencies.

Services and support

Provides advice and support, and works with young people at risk of offending to achieve positive outcomes

• offers advice and support, and works with parents whose children are at risk of offending, or who have already been involved in offending
• provides support and advice to the victims of crime by young people
• delivers a range of restorative justice interventions to meet the needs of the victims of youth crime, including reparation and mediation
• works with young people who have committed offences to help them understand the consequences of their behaviour
• provides a range of interventions that address the causes of young people's misbehaviour and offending
• supervises young people who are made subject to court orders both in the community and in custody
• provides objective, informed advice on sentencing to the courts
• contributes to building confidence in the criminal justice system
• delivers services that are lean, fit for purpose and provide value for money
• provides staff that can act as an appropriate adult for young people held at a police station

Who South Tees Youth Justice Service works with Victims of youth crime are contacted by the Youth Justice Service. This is to ensure their views are represented in the criminal justice process, and to inform any interventions delivered to young people to help them to repair any harm caused by their offending. Where a young offender is sentenced to a referral order, victims are encouraged to attend a youth offender panel, where they can meet the young person face to face and explain what impact the offender's behaviour has had on their life.

Young people aged 10 to 17 years are supervised and supported by the Youth Justice Service. This can be in a range of ways including out-of-court disposals ('Triage', youth cautions, and Conditional Cautions); preparation of court reports; bail support programmes; supervision of community sentences; supervision of young people subject to custodial sentences, and work to prevent anti-social behaviour.
