Education & Training
Within this section you can find lots of information about education settings within Middlesbrough and the surrounding areas. We have also added information about out of area schools and independent schools that some of Middlesbrough children attend. You can also find out information about attendance, school admissions and elective home education.
Choosing a School
When choosing a school, read the Schools SEN information report to get a better understanding of how the school can meet your child’s needs. You can find this on the schools own website.
Try and arrange a visit to the schools, meet the Head teacher and chat to the Special Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) to find out more about the school and get your own feel for it. Remember, you can also ask other parents for their thoughts too.
We often refer to 'transitions' within education. What we mean by this is where there is a significant change in education such as starting primary school, moving from primary to secondary and preparing for adulthood, including starting college.
As these transitions can bring lots of challenges, its good to start the process early. For example in Year 5 we would start talking about secondary schools. If you have an EHCP, the transition will be discussed during the Year 5 'Annual review' and your SEN Case Officer would be involved.
In Year 6, decisions need to be made around your choice of secondary schools.
School Bases / ARP's / Resource Provision
A small number of mainstream schools within Middlesbrough (in agreement with Middlesbrough Council) provide a High Needs Base (HNB) to support young people with their Special Educational Needs. A base can be a separate building within the school that young people use for their lessons, or it can be something as simple as one class with limited numbers of pupils and a higher staff ratio.
The schools that have a base are highlighted on the Schools List in red and state which area of need they are able to support with.
You can find more information around what is offered within the bases within the Information and Guidance section or by going straight to the base information page.
